Summary: Challenge - Princeton's Department of Athletics wanted an identity to encompass all departmental programs, convey the dynamism of student-athletes and teams, and appeal to alumni and fans. Strategy - Representatives of athletics, other campus entities and Pentagram toured the campus and met with focus groups of student-athletes, alumni, coaches, faculty and administrators. Drawing on their feedback, Princeton’s history and archival documentation, the designers focused on the historical interplay between the University’s academic and athletic traditions. Result - The process resulted in the creation of an effective kit of visual elements based on Princeton iconography with endless combinations that connect the University’s history with its vibrant present.
