Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics


Summary:

Industry Setting - The Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics – SIB – is an academic, non-profit foundation established in 1998. SIB coordinates research and education in bioinformatics throughout Switzerland and provides high quality bioinformatics services to the national and international research community.

Challenge - Since the SIB was established in 1998 it has become the peak body in Switzerland in the field of bioinformatics. However, the brand and overall institutional look was very old fashioned and needed to be reinvented.

The new identity would need to be easily applicable across all types of media and in the context of co-branding initiatives.

Strategy - We wanted to create a clean, modern and easily recognizable identity, somewhat reminiscent of the Swiss graphic design style of the 1950’s.

The lines and spheres in the new logo represent a protein network, in reference to the Institute’s main area of research. At the same time, they symbolize the collaboration and networking between the individual research groups. The logo’s shape evokes a computer screen, and the rounded edges convey a sense of friendliness and openness.

The Swiss cross and Helvetica typeface underline the Institute’s origin and represent values that are traditionally associated with Switzerland: quality, reliability and expertise.

Result - The new identity was rolled out simultaneously with a complete redesign of the Institute’s website.

It has drawn a great deal of enthusiasm and an all round positive response. In addition, there has been considerable increase in traffic —over 50%!— to the new look of the SIB website, which is a showcase of the new institution.
