Summary: Industry Setting - Buehler’s Fresh Foods—a family-owned, full-service grocer in Ohio—wanted to grow within their market and renovate stores unchanged since the 1980’s. Located mainly in small towns and suburbs, Buehler’s struggled with competition from ambitiously expanding national grocery chains. Challenge - The two-fold challenge included un-locking what made Buehler’s a unique brand and transforming that into a consumer-focused brand experience, innovating store design while maintaining brand integrity. Strategy - The core of the Buehler’s brand was their family story, values, native Ohio heritage and culture of friendliness. Through a series of renovations and a newly designed prototype building, a comprehensive experience was choreographed to: • Highlight attention on customer service programs • Communicate the Buehler’s family story • Create a more inviting and emotive shopping environment • Break the mold of the traditional grocery store Additionally, new proprietary dining concepts were created, existing Buehler’s features were improved upon and new elements of the brand identity were developed to reinforce the cohesive, branded experience of “the consummate host.” Result - The new, branded store experience allowed Buehler’s to compete against large, national chains with a local, familial point of difference. Success has become evident in their community support and increased patronage.
