Chicago History Museum Rebrand by Studio Lab

Summary:

Industry Setting - The Chicago History Museum is an independent cultural institution focused on Chicago and United States history.

Challenge - In 2004 the Chicago Historical Society underwent a name change to Chicago History Museum as part of a strategic plan to re-position itself. Studio/lab was asked to design a set of visual and verbal brand tools to communicate the new name and new vision. The primary challenge was to represent history as vibrant, dynamic, and future–oriented, while maintaining the integrity and tradition of the academic institution.

Strategy - The goal of this rebranding was to celebrate and illuminate the human element of Chicago’s history, to make it relevant now and project it into the future. In this undertaking, history is envisioned as dynamic and interactive, and the Museum as the place to experience it in personal and collective ways.

The Museum was re-imagined as a place to preserve and share the plurality of inspiring narratives and artifacts of Chicago. It seeks to set a new standard for Museum-going experience. And by enriching personal memories through the telling of powerful stories, the Museum experience becomes an authoritative resource for historical research and education.

Result - The visual identity, inspired by Chicago’s architectural skyline, expresses the stories, voices, and layers of history—all that Chicago was, is, and will be.
