Ka-Kao Rebrand by Cacao Design, Milan

Summary:

Industry Setting - Asian Fusion Restaurant located in Milan

Challenge/Strategy - Mister Gao is one of the first chinese restaurants that started in Milano about 25 years ago. Thanks to its success, the Gao family (Kao in its historical origin in China) now owns many of the most important chinese and japanese restaurants in Milano.

Mr. Massimo Gao, the son of the founder, wanted to renew this historical, but old looking restaurant. It's importance was re-established by changing it to an innovative place that specializes in fusion cuisine. As the historical origin was an important factor, he wanted something special that could maintain the connection to the family tradition. The space was completely refurbished by architect, Nisi Magnoni, who was able to maintain the restaurant's historical origin with some innovative architectural features.

The name and the logo also needed to change in line with this concept.

Result - Ka-Kao in italian has a japanese sound but stands for “the house of Kao”, the word “Ka” in italian in fact sounds like “Cŕ”, which stands for “casa” (house), and Kao reflects the ancient origins of the family. The tree, visually represented as a logo, shows how the “new” always grows from its origin, and how everything (the six other restaurants the Gao family owns) has grown from a single root (the Ka-Kao restaurant).
